About iMusic

iMusic is a small collection of browser-based tools for practicing Indian classical music. Nothing to install, no accounts, no tracking, and no cost — it's free for anyone to use, in full, with no paywall or premium tier. Just open a tool and play.

What's here today

• Harmonium — a 3-octave Indian harmonium with real samples, sargam labels relative to your chosen Sa, raga highlighting for several common Carnatic and Hindustani ragas, a built-in tanpura drone, reverb, and record/playback.
• Tanpura — fully synthesized 4-string drone with Pa·Sa·Sa·Sa, Ma·Sa·Sa·Sa, Ni·Sa·Sa·Sa, or pure Sa tuning. Pick a raga and the tuning pattern updates to match it automatically. Adjustable tempo, volume, and jawari shimmer.
• Tabla — fully synthesized rhythm player covering both Hindustani talas (Teentaal, Keherwa, Dadra, Roopak, Jhaptaal, Ektaal) and Carnatic talas (Adi, Rupaka, Misra Chapu, Khanda Chapu) with solkattu syllables and anga (clap/wave/count) markers on the live grid.
• Tuner — microphone-based pitch detection with both Western note names and sargam relative to your chosen Sa. Audio is processed entirely in your browser.
• Metronome — a plain, tala-agnostic click track for practice, with tap tempo and beat counts including the five Carnatic jatis (tisra, chatusra, khanda, misra, sankeerna).
• Lessons — a full bilingual (English/Telugu) Carnatic music curriculum: swaras and sarali/janta/dhatu/melsthayi varisai, talam, the 72-melakarta system with an interactive raga wheel, gamakas (with audio comparing each ornament to the plain note), voice practice and improvisation, and concert format — with playable audio on every exercise and local, no-login progress tracking.
• Composers — bilingual profiles of the Carnatic Trinity (Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, Syama Sastri): biography, contributions, and famous compositions, cross-linked to their ragas in the Melakarta System.
• Instruments — bilingual profiles of Veena, Mridangam, and Violin: history, construction, playing technique, famous artists, and a "hear it" representative sound for each.
• Books — a curated, bilingual reading list of standard reference texts on Carnatic and Hindustani music.
• Articles — bilingual essays on history and theory: Carnatic vs. Hindustani, the katapayadi naming system, and the guru-shishya tradition.
• Audio & Video — a hub indexing every playable sound on the site, with quick previews of its own. No video — everything here is live, in-browser audio.

Credits

Harmonium samples are from the Tone.js Instruments free sample library. The interactive melakarta wheel in Lessons is rendered with D3.js. The panchangam widget is calculated locally using Astronomy Engine. Everything else — every other sound, visualization, and page — is built from scratch using the Web Audio API.
